Meet Veronica 🐊🧬 From a 10th‑grade biology class Meet Veronica 🐊🧬

From a 10th‑grade biology class to groundbreaking discoveries in bacterial immunity, Veronica’s journey shows what passion and mentorship can achieve.

In Dr. Artem Nemudryi’s lab, Veronica Perez Taboada studies how bacteria defend themselves against viral infections. Her recent Nature Microbiology paper provides the first experimental evidence that Schlafen proteins function as prokaryotic anti‑phage immune effectors, expanding the known scope of bacterial innate immunity.

“It was really cool to make that connection and see how different immune strategies are conserved across all organisms,” Veronica shares.

Her work bridges fundamental biology and future biotechnology tools that could one day help patients in the clinic.
